American Depository Receipt: Certificates issued by a US bank or trust company against the deposit of the original (foreign) share certificates with a sub-custodian in the country of original issue. As foreign shares are deposited abroad, the equivalent ADRs are issued to buyers in the US markets. ADRs trade, clear and settle in the US just as any other registered US security.
